Cross Country
1. Sport Description
Distance
Races are shorter than high school cross country, typically ranging from 1.5 to 2 miles (about 2.5–3.2 km).
Distances vary depending on the school district or league.
Format
Teams from different schools line up at a starting line.
Everyone starts at the same time (a "mass start"), and the course is usually marked with flags, cones, or chalk.
Runners navigate hills, grass, dirt paths, and sometimes small obstacles.
Scoring
Cross country is both an individual and team sport.
The team score is the sum of the finishing places of the first 5 runners on a team (lower scores are better). For example, if a team's top five runners finish 2nd, 5th, 7th, 10th, and 15th, the score is 39.
The team with the lowest total score wins.
Training
Practices focus on building endurance with longer runs, improving speed with intervals, and learning pacing strategies.
Coaches also emphasize proper warm-ups, cool-downs, and stretching to prevent injuries.
Atmosphere
Meets are usually friendly and encouraging, with teammates cheering loudly along the course.
Many middle schoolers use cross country to prepare for high school running or just as a fun way to stay active.
